The 51st Grammy Awards

Wednesday 11 February, 2009

The Grammys are America’s annual music industry awards. They cover all music genres. Let’s list some award categories… rock, classical, jazz, blues, gospel, pop, dance, alternative, R&B, rap, hip-hop, new age, country, Latin, folk, reggae, polka, children’s, comedy, musicals and soundtracks. Wow, that’s a lot of awards! While I think The Grammys are simply a puppet for the music industry to congratulate themselves, there are still some great musicians amongst it all.

Here are some clips of winning artists and their songs. Unfortunately all YouTube clips of the Grammy awards night have been banned, so clips of live performances have been used. Enjoy!

Song of the Year / Best Pop Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocals / Best Rock Album: Viva La Vida by Coldplay

Best New Artist / Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: Chasing Pavements by Adele

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance: Say by John Mayer

Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance: Gravity by John Mayer

Best Female R&B Vocal Performance: Superwoman by Alicia Keys

Happy New Year… Sydney Style!

Thursday 8 January, 2009

Happy new year! In case you missed the Sydney harbour fireworks, here’s some awesome clips for you. If you double click them to open them in a new window, you can watch them in hi-definition! The synchronisation of the fireworks with music is awesome and I love the mix of pop and classical music. Want the grand finale? Watch Part 2 from 2:06 to the end (2 minutes).

School Ensembles for 2009

Saturday 13 December, 2008

I would like you boys to start thinking about music groups and ensembles you would like to participate in for 2009. Here are some ideas…

  • Rock group
  • Jazz ensemble
  • Lebanese drumming group
  • Reggae ensemble
  • Barbershop choir
  • R&B ensemble
  • Classical guitar ensemble
  • DJ group
  • Percussion ensemble

Do any of these ensembles interest you? If so, please leave a comment! Is there a group not mentioned here? If so, please leave a comment.

I have made a poll, and if there is sufficient interest from this post, I will post it here to see what groups boys are interested in.

So what can you do during the holidays to prepare? Think of a song list, practice some songs, contact other students who may be interested, look for any music material online (audio files, YouTube videos, TABs, public domain sheet music), go to Allans Print Music and see if there is music I can buy for you, email me any questions or information you have so I can go over it with you (my school email is “aclare@” with the usual school ending).

So get involved! Let’s make 2009 an awesome year for music at our school!

Blackbird

Saturday 31 May, 2008

Found this YouTube clip of Sungha Jung playing Blackbird on the guitar. He’s an eleven year old boy from South Korea. Pretty awesome for someone his age! Blackbird was written by Paul McCartney, a member from The Beatles. Paul McCartney’s musical inspiration for this piece was Bach’s Bouree in E minor. I thought it may inspire you to greater musical accomplishments…

Check out all the videos at Shangha Jung’s YouTube channel.
